Meet our alumni volunteers: Heemanshu Gupta

We have a great and enthusiastic international alumni volunteer team of 22 people from 15 countries. Most of them decided to create an alumni chapter in their home country or make international professional alumni groups and some of them did great social media work. In the next chapter of our volunteer series, you can read Heemanshu Gupta’s story from India! He studied in Hungary between 2020-2022 at ELTE and now he’s CEO of Creative Youth Academy.

Why did you choose Hungary and ELTE University?
Hungary has a long history in scientific research and also provides a unique cultural experience that can enhance someone’s personal growth and perspectives. The country has a rich cultural heritage, and the vibrant city of Budapest, where ELTE is located, offered me a diverse and lively environment. The ELTE University is known for its research facilities and contributions to various fields and is one of Hungary's leading institutions with a strong academic reputation. The university offers high-quality programs in various fields, attracting students from around the world.

How did you like your studies? What was your favourite memory during your studies?
I thoroughly enjoyed my studies at ELTE University, especially pursuing my master's in chemistry. The academic environment was enriching, and the faculty provided a solid foundation for my understanding of the subject. The diverse and international community at ELTE added a unique flavour to my overall experience. One of my favourite memories during my studies was the collaborative spirit among students. Working on group projects and conducting experiments with classmates from different cultural backgrounds not only enhanced my academic knowledge but also allowed me to appreciate the global perspectives in chemistry.
Additionally, ELTE's commitment to providing a well-rounded education allowed me to engage in extracurricular activities and events, fostering a sense of community. Exploring Budapest and experiencing Hungarian culture alongside my studies made my time at ELTE truly memorable.
Overall, my master's program at ELTE University was a rewarding and transformative experience, and I am grateful for the opportunities it provided for personal and academic growth.

How did you like the country?
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Hungary since I arrived. The country has a rich cultural heritage, and I've had the opportunity to explore its history, traditions, and delicious cuisine. The city life is vibrant, and I've had the chance to make new friends and engage in various cultural activities. Overall, my experience in Hungary has been both academically rewarding and personally enriching.

Did you have any difficulties with the Hungarian culture? What was that and how did you handle it?
Adapting to Hungarian culture posed some initial challenges, primarily due to differences in communication styles and social norms. Overcoming language barriers and embracing open-mindedness helped me smooth the transition while engaging in cultural exchange activities and seeking guidance from locals played a crucial role in fostering understanding and integration.

How does the Hungarian culture differ from the Indian culture?
Hungarian and Indian cultures differ significantly in aspects such as language, cuisine, and social customs. Hungary, a European nation, has a distinct Central European influence in its traditions, while India, with its rich history and diverse regions, boasts a unique blend of languages, religions, and culinary traditions. Understanding these cultural nuances enhanced my experience and interactions in Hungary.

You are among the alumni volunteers. Why did you apply for that position? What's your task and how do you manage it? What do you think about the Alumni Network Hungary?
I applied for the alumni volunteer position to connect with fellow graduates and to contribute to the community. My task involves contributing to organizing events and fostering communication. Managing it requires effective coordination and leveraging digital platforms. The Alumni Network Hungary is a valuable resource, providing a platform for networking and collaboration among diverse alumni, and enhancing our global connections. In 2022 I set up a foundation ( Creative Youth Academy) serving the Hungarian and international community living in Hungary at local, national, and international levels. Until November 2023, we helped 386 participants from Hungary to go abroad for short-term training and exchanges to develop their competencies and skills (including leadership and intercultural) for a better and sustainable future. We also welcomed 44 participants from abroad to Hungary to show Hungarian culture, values, and hospitality.

What's your plan for the future?
Gaining specialized skills to enhance career prospects in addition to leveraging networking opportunities and staying updated with industry trends to contribute to long-term success. In my opinion, cultivating a balance between professional growth and personal well-being is crucial for a fulfilling future.
